Dr. Eugene Porter (Josh McDermitt) met majority of Rick Grimes' (Andrew Lincoln) group during the Season 4 finale of "The Walking Dead," and now that filming for the upcoming season is still ongoing, McDermitt has recently said that he's finally enjoying working with the original cast members, whom he's been admiring since the launch of the series back in October 2010.
"It's fun because just coming in as a fan of the show, I want to work with everyone and I want to see how they work and I want to see their process," the 36-year-old actor told Channel Guide Magazine in a September interview. "I've heard stories about how Andy Lincoln does things or how Norman [Reedus] (Daryl Dixon) does things and so forth, and it's been fun to watch that."
But McDermitt, who appeared as a contestant on NBC's reality talent show "Last Comic Standing" in 2006 and 2008, admitted that working with a big cast has its challenges.
"It's also been a bit of a learning experience to work with a cast that big within such a confined space, like the train car, for example," he explained. "Not everyone is going to have a line, not everyone is going to have the focus be on them for the scene, and so you kind of have to learn to be present in that moment and observe and be clear with your intentions for your character."
In an interview with Moviepilot earlier last month, McDermitt said that his life has changed in significant ways since he landed Eugene's role.
"It's funny but I have no time to do things, but also more time to do things," the "Retired at 35" actor shared. "In the past, I would be trying to get a new job, or writing, or working on comedy, but now I have time to do things like go to the range with Christian Serratos (Rosita Espinosa). I wouldn't have done something like that in LA."
"I've become more friendly since living in the south," he added. "People at the grocery store say hello, not because I'm on the show, but because that's what you do when someone comes into your store."
Eugene's backstory will be revealed when the show returns on AMC on Oct. 12 for its fifth season.
"We're really going to jump into the backstory of Eugene a little more in Season 5," he told Wetpaint last month. "There really wasn't a lot of time to get to know him, but we're going to get to know him a little better, which is great."
