Directioners were shocked when a video emerged of One Direction band mates Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson smoking a joint in a car on the Latin American leg of their tour. A five minute video was released to The Daily Mail showing the two passing a joint and heavily referencing their marijuana usage.
Parents and fans are understandably furious as the One Direction heartthrobs are role models to young kids.
"It is disgusting. It is completely wrong, they get paid so much money and they spend it on drugs. It is a bad message for children, I have heard kids talking in the queue saying it is all right," Julie Talbott, whose daughter planned to attend the show in Sunderland, said.
"They think if the boys do it then they can do it. I could kill them as they have taken over my daughter's life for three years and she would never do it but it is worrying."
Alcohol and drug protection charity Mentor agreed, stating, "Zayn and Louis have a great opportunity to be a good role model for young people but they blow it here. We hope their young fans are not swayed by their example."
The video begins with Malik in focus and Tomlinson narrating in the background.
"So here we are, leaving Peru. Joint lit. Happy days!" he says.
"What do you think about that kind of content?" he asks Malik.
"Very controversial," Malik responds.
They continue to joke about smoking marijuana and when a cop drives by Tomlinson films them and says, "I'm sure I can smell an illegal substance in there." And he's hit the nail on the head."
Some fans went as far as to burn their 1D memorabilia and shred their concert tickets, while others felt the two had done nothing wrong.
Columbia Records, who the band is signed to, confirmed "the matter is in the hands of our lawyers."
Fellow band mates Harry Styles, Niall Horan and Liam Payne did not appear to be present at the time of the incident. Watch the video here.
