Kanye West is no stranger to controversy, and Mike Meyers gets it. Back in 2005, the "Yeezus" rapper said that President George Bush "does not care about black people" during a Hurricane Katrina telethon.
The "Austin Powers" star played cool for the moment, as he stood alongside West, but is opening up 9 years later about what he really thought.
"For me it isn't about the look of embarrassment on my face, it is truly about the injustice that was happening in New Orleans," the "Shrek" star told GQ's June 2014 issue. "I don't mind answering the question but the emphasis of it being that I'm the guy next to the guy who spoke a truth. I assume that George Bush does care about black people-I mean I don't know him, I'm going to make that assumption-but I can definitively say that it appeared to me watching television that had that been white people, the government would have been there faster."
This was a career defining moment for North West's father, and Meyers was honored to be part of it.
"They said, 'Would you do it with Kanye West'" and I said, 'Uh, sure,'" he explains. "I actually wasn't familiar with his work. And then he said he was going to take some liberties with the thing."
Meyers was also asked about revisiting past roles, such as "Austin Powers" or "Wayne's World."
"That's an interesting question. The quick answer is: Yes, I'm prepared to do anything, you know, if it's good. If it feels like it's going to be thrilling," he said.
We are sure West will love to know he has Meyers' support, especially during his European wedding weekend!
