Fashion mogul Victoria Beckham made quite a career transition, and she tells Business of Fashion how it was not easy.
The mother of four and wife of David Beckham revealed her technique to being taken seriously as a designer.
"I like to keep my head down, work hard, focus on what I'm doing business wise," the former Spice Girl explained. "I like to try to control how much I'm seen. I don't want to go out and be photographed every day, you know."
The publication points out in the last year Beckham's business turned over about $50 million in sales, a 91 percent increase from the previous year.
Regarding her fame, the designer notes her previous fame has helped in molding her fashion brand, but she does not like to always "play that card."
"The most valuable part of being famous is that you have a voice and people will listen. I mean I can get a lot of attention. I don't have to rely on advertising campaigns," she admits. "But I don't like to use that card very often."
While starting out, the 40-year-old received harsh criticism from fellow industry insiders who felt a celebrity could not be a designer.
"Everybody said, 'well it's never going to work because a celebrity can't do a line,'" she recalled, admitting that the fact that "everyone thought it was going to be rubbish" took the pressure off a little bit.
"There were no expectations," she explained. "I didn't expect it to be any other way. I didn't go into this to prove anything to anybody other than myself."
The Daily Mail notes she launched the first portion of her line in 2009, which only carried dresses. Two years later, Beckham added handbags and coats.
