This coming Valentine's Day might inspire you to try a new look! Seeking a romantic new you? Consider the advice of celebrity stylist, Josue Perez. Josue is responsible for some of the hottest heads in Hollywood including Gwyneth Paltrow, Cameron Diaz, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Stella McCartney. Check out our interview with the expert and what looks he says go great for every face shape.
So Josue, can we pull off a sexy Valentine's Day hair look without being too obvious or corny? What's the trick?
Go for a casual, yet glamorous look. Face framing chignon buns are always appropriate for Valentine's Day. To achieve this look, all you do is curl the ends of your hair - I recommend using the Rowenta Versa Style Iron ($200) for creating soft waves. It emits pure negative ions as you curl - protecting your hair against damage. Next, create a heavy side part, and pull the hair into a low side bun.
Any romantic hair trends we should keep in mind?
Braids! A one-sided loose braid can look very romantic during a night out on the town, plus it is for the most part, very easy to create.
What celebrity styles should we draw inspiration from?
If you have a heart-shaped face, a la Reese Witherspoon, be inspired by her wispy side-swept bangs to draw focus away from a more narrow chin. Oval-faces can pull off just about any look. Take a page out of Julianne Hough's book and accentuate the layers around your chin and not your cheeks to really highlight your features. For round faces like Emma Stone or Ginnifer Goodwin, the goal should be to elongate the face. If your hair is long, have your stylist give you long layers so they won't box the face. If you want to go short, keep the volume at the crown of the head.
Valentine's Day falls on a Friday this year! How do we kick off a romantic weekend right with hair that goes from the office to date night?
Creating a teased root ponytail is easy to quickly style at the office before heading out for your romantic weekend. It's also a fun look that goes well for casual or chic plans. This can be achieved simply by teasing the top section of hair and only brushing the sides tighter into a ponytail.
What products should we use that will still keep hair touchably soft?
When using a blow dryer, flat iron or curling iron, always make sure it contains an ionic generator. Ionic dryers release negatively charged ions that attach to the positively charged hair particles to form a protective coating. The protective coating results in shinier, smoother, and frizz-free hair. A great one is Rowenta's Inspiration Pro Auto Sensor Hair Dryer ($159.99).
What tips and easy techniques should we use to look our V-day best?
When blow drying, towel dry hair 50% right after the shower, leaving it still half-wet. Hair has "porosity" so the leftover dampness/moisture help close hair pores giving it natural shine when you blow dry.
Any looks to absolutely avoid?
For Valentine's Day, avoid looking overdone. Don't go overboard with styling products, just about a dime-size so your hair won't feel stiff.
Thanks Josue!
