News broke recently that a Pennsylvania woman stole her parents' identities to pay for plastic surgery. The woman fraudulently got more than $700,000 in loans to go under the knife.
According to NBC10 Philadelphia, the woman was identified as 36-year-old Meredith Shuster.
The defendant was sentenced to prison for stealing her parents' identities, in order to obtain $729,000 in student loans. Much of the large lump sum of money was used to pay for cosmetic procedures.
A federal prosecutor say Shuster spent the money on other personal things not related to the surgeries, reported the news station. Shuster also reportedly victimized other students, whose parents were are struggling to fund their college educations.
Shuster's lawyer claimed that there was a particular reason why the woman had to resort to desperate means to get surgery.
The attorny argued that the Cranberry, PA. woman has "body dysmorphic disorder,'' which compulsively drives her to have surgery to change her appearance.
The lawyer says nearly half the money Shuster stole was used for such surgeries, reported the news station.
As of now, things are looking down for Shuster. A federal judge ordered her to spend 15 months in federal prison. and repay nearly $633,000 still outstanding on the loans.
