Does plastic surgery help you get a job? Several graduates in China are putting this idea into action, turning to cosmetic procedures to beat other candidates when applying for employment.
According to RT.com, a record 7 million graduates entering the country's job market are eager to improve their chances of gaining a professional position by going under the knife.
"Some students face a lot of employment pressure after graduation," said surgeon Wang Xuming to Agence France-Presse, "if their facial features are good, they'll have more chance of finding a job."
The graduates are getting a $9,800 nose job known as the "Eiffel Tower" to appear more attractive to employers, reported RT.com.
Given that China's economy is growing slowly, young people are having a difficult time finding work. A June survey by a Beijing-based education consultancy, MyCOS shows that around 10 percent of recent university graduates are unemployed, more than double China's official unemployment rate for the general population.
With many college-age men and women struggling to make money, they hit the job market only to meet dead ends. It seems that Chinese employers want attractive job candidates. Reportedly, some companies even post height requirements when trying to fill vacancies.
Xu Yang, 26, who is from Beijing, underwent liposuction this year partly to help her find a job.
"I was fat, and after surgery, finding a job can be easier," said Yang. "Employers sometimes care more about your appearance than your experience, especially for white-collar jobs."
