Marvel's "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D's" cast helped the series to draw more than 12 million viewers during its 2013 premiere. But the reviews were mixed for the new ABC Joss Whedon sci-fi drama.
According to Hollywood Life, the show's superheroes may not have super powers, they did achieve super ratings during Tuesday night's debut.
The new hero-centric drama pulled in 12.1 million total viewers, making it the best launch for any TV drama in four years. The first season opener was so popular that ABC is giving fans a chance to watch it again on Thursday at 8 p.m.
A lot of interesting plotlines captivated fans during the pilot episode starring Chloe Bennet. The debut opened with the world trying to come to grips with the reality of knowing that superheroes and aliens exist after the "Battle of New York." Agent Phil Coulson, played by Clark Gregg, has his eye on a mysterious group called The Rising Tide.
In order to track The Tide, he assembles a small group of Agents from the law-enforcement organization known as the Strategic Homeland Intervention Enforcement and Logistics Division or S.H.I.E.L.D. The team's first assignment finds them trying to track down an ordinary man, who has gained extraordinary powers that could have devastating consequences.
The sci-fi series is Marvel's first attempt at capturing an audience on the small screen. Expections were very high for the anticipated series premiere, which didn't always live up to the hype, according to Den of Geek.
"It's certainly not a bad piece of TV - the plot mostly makes sense, the cast is mostly good, and there's an undeniable thrill in seeing the likes of Coulson and Hill on screen outside the movies," wrote Den of Geek's James Hunt. "But it's also not as good as it should have been: it looks a little economical, the pace is meandering, and it doesn't seem to know which story it's actually trying to tell."
