"The Wolverine" clawed its way to the top at this weekend's box office, taking the number one spot, according to the Huffington Post.
The Hugh Jackman starring summer flick had a $55 million opening weekend in North America, according to studio estimates on Sunday. In Jackman's sixth turn at the claw-crazed superhero, he beat "The Conjuring" at number two with $22.1 million and "Despicable Me 2" at three with $16 million.
The film also earned another $86.1 million overseas, reported Huffington.
Chris Aronson, Fox's head of domestic distribution, said it had a solid debut, "it's a huge opening for the clawed one."
"It played equally well from Maine to Maui," Aronson continued.
But the $120 million, 3-D comic book crusader film set in Japan and featuring an international cast actually had sales below its projections, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" had debuted with $30 million more in 2009 than this film, and pre-release viewer surveys revealed the film had an earning potential of $80.
But Aronson was very optimistic despite the lower-than-expected sales, "This is a great result and we couldn't be happier."
Aronson simply chalked up the trailing box office performance to "sketchy industry tracking" of movie sales and to the sequel hitting theaters at a "different time" than the original.
