British textile designer Celia Birtwell has unveiled the much awaited capsule collection for Japanese casual wear retailer, Uniqlo, March 11. The brand new collection will be officially launched by the retailer on March 21.
The collection includes cotton dresses, jumpsuits, leggings, t-shirts, tunic vests, pajama pants, shorts, scarves and totes, all in the designer’s signature bright prints.
Uniqlo first showed interest in collaborating with Birtwell when the company came across her collection for Topshop in 2006. When they approached the designer, she took them through her archives.
“Uniqlo has grown over the years for me," Birtwell told Vogue. “I've always thought that they are very good at doing men's basics and at designing simple shapes. We had a very peaceful initial meeting, which was very appealing. I did think though, 'They could really do with a good print.' And that's how it began.”
Birtwell also explained that she had a good time working with the Japanese brand as they both share a love for prints.
The Briton, who draws influences from the classical world, was a well known name in the 60s and 70s. She has also worked with celebrity bands including the “Rolling Stones”, “Beatles” and “Pink Floyd” and has also designed for rocker, Jimi Hendrix.
While fans from these years would recognize her designs, Birtwell wants to reach out to the newer and younger audience with the Uniqlo collection. She also stressed on the detail that fashion now is different from what it used to be in the 60s, adding that products had to be affordable then and no one would spend a massive sum for a bag unlike these days.
"It's very young and fresh," she added. "There's an accent of youth and something for every generation. There's understated prints and bolder ones, I hope it will cater for a broad range of people, in the same way my Topshop line did."
