Designer Michael Kors will be honored by the Couture Council of the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology with the prestigious Artistry of Fashion award, Sept. 4.
Kors will be presented with the award honoring his contribution to the world of fashion during a luncheon at the Lincoln Center to mark the beginning of New York Fashion Week.
"I'm deeply honoured to receive this award from the Couture Council," Kors told Vogue. "They do such an amazing job putting the spotlight on design, and I think that to be included in the esteemed company that has been awarded this honour in the past is very gratifying and very exciting."
Kors has been nominated for the award numerous times in the past but receiving the award in September, he will join the likes of Valentino, Karl Lagerfeld and Oscar de la Renta.
Kors has had a successful 2012 as his three labels, Michael Kors, Kors Michael Kors and Michael Michael Kors have earned a revenue of about $1.96 billion.
Kors, former creative director of French fashion house Celine, is well known not just for his handbags and watches but rose to fame with his American sportswear collection for women, which received global recognition.
"I'm always happy to wave the flag that design is not strictly haute couture, but that there is something about American sportswear that is such a part of global dressing now," Kors told WWD, according to Style Blazer. "I think people now realize there is more to American sportswear than jeans and T-shirts. It's a way of dressing, it's a way of life, ultimately. It's not American anymore, it's global."
Kors has an enviable number of celeb patrons which includes Michelle Obama, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Rachel McAdams, Gwyneth Paltrow and Heidi Klum.
The Couture Council list of honorees includes Isabel Toledo (2008), Dries Van Noten (2009), Karl Lagerfeld (2010), Valentino (2011), and Oscar de la Renta (2012).
