Backed by a study, TikTokers discussed how cyperus oil works as a substitute for laser as a painless treatment for those who permanently want to remove their underarm hair as well as hyperpigmentation.
In the short-form video-sharing platform, Shereene Idriss, a board-certified dermatologist and founder of Dr. Idriss's skincare line has been gaining massive attention for educating viewers about a natural alternative for lasers to decrease armpit hair.
Dr. Idriss introduced the Cyperus rotundus oil that promises painless permanent hair removal. Her claim was based on a study held by Ghada, M. and Aesthet, J. (2014) published in the National Library of Medicine.
The scientists conducted the research using 3 study groups; oil, saline, and Alexandrite laser, a traditional treatment used by dermatologists to remove hair.
60 participants joined the study and the result was evaluated by hair count, independent professionals' observations, and patient's self-assessment.
The result then stated that the slowed growth of hair between the oil and Alex laser "did not differ" significantly, but the former recorded a significant effect in decreased growth of white hair.
@shereeneidriss YES! Cyperus rotundus oil is a derm-approved hack for permanent hair removal 🙌 Cyperus rotundus oil has been shown to be as effective as an Alex laser treatment in reducing the growth of both dark and white axillary hair. This small study show’s potential, but more studies are definitely needed to full evaluate its effectiveness and limitations. "Cyperus oil basically has flavonoids that exert an anti-androgenetic effect, meaning they're fighting that male hormone testosterone that is contributing to excess androgenic hair growth," Dr. Idriss explained.
However, she clarified that this hair removal method does not happen overnight, stating that the study was conducted twice a day for 6 months before seeing results.
She furthered that there is more study needed for it to be a reliable remedy for removing armpit hair. However, since it showed no side effects, it is safe to try.
Lastly, she talked about cyperus rotundus oil potentially reducing skin discoloration in the underarm area as well. "It inhibits the tyrosinase enzyme which is responsible for overproducing melanin," she explained.
In her video, she tried Nature Max Cyperus Oil available in eBay for $29, but there are also more affordable products on Amazon shoppers can choose from.
