Hair loss, or baldness, is a common condition that both men and women around the world suffer. The causes of this problem may arise from genetic or medical conditions, stress, and more.
In recent studies collated by Dermatology Times, it is highlighted how Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatment may be the solution to bring back the self-confidence of those people experiencing hair loss.
"PRP therapy enhances tissue repair and stimulates hair follicle activity, potentially offering advantages over traditional treatments like minoxidil and finasteride, which have limitations and adverse events," quoted by media outlet.
In a study held among female patients 18 years old and above with various types of hair loss; Female pattern hair loss (FPHL), androgenetic alopecia (AGA), and telogen effluvium (TE), researchers found that PRP therapy slowed down hair shredding, and at the same time, boosted hair growth.
To better understand the concept of this treatment, Michael Baria, M.D., the director of the ortho biologics program at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center explained via Forbes that PRP is a "therapeutic step-by-step process" where the patient's blood containing platelets will be drawn and put it in a certain area to speed the healing.
"Platelets contain proteins that promote tissue repair. By increasing platelet concentration and injecting them at the site of injury, PRP aims to improve the capacity for healing and recovery," said Baria.
This PRP injection may be promised to be the cure and way to prevent hair loss, but hair loss specialist Michael Lorin Reed, MD said in an article that its success rate is only 80%, and each treatment is also pricey, ranging from $500 to $2,500.
Moreover, its effectiveness will still based on various factors including the health status of the patient, hair loss type and its level of severity, PRP preparation method, and treatment protocol, including the number and interval of sessions, as per Indian Express.
