Dior has launched its first alcohol-free cologne for men.
After becoming the perfume creation director at Dior in 2021, French perfumer Francis Kurkdjian raised excitement as he introduced the first fragrance he created for the luxury brand's men's section, the Dior Sauvage Eau Forte.
The brand described Dior Sauvage Eau Forte as a cologne that's as "fresh as an eau de toilette and as intense as a perfume."
Contrary to most colognes, which contain 70% to 90% alcohol, Dior's new offering is completely water-based with no alcohol content.
As its name suggests, the Eau Forte -- "strong water" in English -- is inspired by the "power of water," according to Dior.
In an interview with Esquire, Kurkdjian delved deeper into his inspiration for Dior Sauvage Eau Forte and how it's connected to the original Sauvage, which was inspired by the desert.
"It’s true that for the past 10 years, Sauvage was about the desert, but it rains in the desert. And the power of the rain in the desert is even more powerful, because what is rare is precious," the perfumer said.
The new milky-looking cologne was created using a "third party that basically creates the link between oil and water" in the place of alcohol, Kurkdjian explained.
With the help of this unscented ingredient, the perfumer was able to mix an aqueous formula and fragrant oily components using Dior's exclusive innovative nano-emulsion technique to achieve a fresh, cool yet spicy and intense scent.
Although it kept the line's DNA, the Eau Forte drifted away from the original Sauvage's combination of traditional citrus notes of lemon and bergamot and used cool spices instead along with elemi resin to have that fresh fragrance.
These cool spices were then combined with notes of bleached lavender for a sensual base. ending with woody and musky notes.
Discussing the advantage of alcohol-free cologne, Kurkdjian told the magazine, "You can feel the difference between how water brings an extra mile of wetness and coolness. That is something that you can’t get with alcohol."
The Dior Sauvage Eau Forte retails for $160 for the 60-milliliter bottle, while it is priced at $193 for the 100-milliliter bottle. Aside from the Dior site, it is also available at Sephora and Amazon.
