People with hooded eyes all face the same struggle: when eyeliner and eyeshadow are applied, they seem to either disappear or appear less visible. This is especially true for eyeliner; if applied too thickly, it can cover all of the visible eyelid, with the rest of the eye makeup all but disappearing.
Due to this issue, some with hooded eyes struggle with getting the perfect eye makeup and sometimes just do away with it entirely. But luckily, we have some tips for you.
Eyeshadow primer is your friend
Before putting on eyeshadow, apply eye primer on the lids to prevent creasing and smudging.
A significant issue with hooded eyes is eyeshadow creasing on the lids due to the extra layer of brow bone skin tucking the lid into the crease. Eyeshadow primer can prevent this. Investing in a good primer is also a great way to keep your shadows locked in place all day.
One primer we recommend is the Too Faced Shadow Insurance 24-hour Eyeshadow Primer, which keeps eyeshadow locked in, particularly shimmer ones that tend to fade.
Bring your eye makeup crease higher
Eyeshadow application usually starts on the natural eyelid crease. However, due to the way hooded eyes work, you might have to apply it higher.
Instead of applying the color on your crease, where it will be covered by the hooded eyelids, put your shadows a bit higher than the crease. This will prevent your shadow from disappearing when your eyes are open.
A good practice is to do your makeup with your eyes open, so you know how the shadow will look and how much the hood on your eyes will cover.
Apply darker colors on the outside
Applying dark eyeshadow colors can be challenging for those with hooded eyes, as they can make the eyes look smaller.
For those who love to layer their shadows and mix different shades together, put the darker shades on the outer parts of the lid, which will give your eyes a more open look.
Applying the darker shades on the outer part of the eyelids will help your eye makeup pop out more.
Highlight the inner corners
Another tip that will help your eyes stand out is to highlight the inner corners -- a fantastic makeup trick employed by many artists.
All you have to do is take a small-tipped brush, dab it on your favorite highlighter or shimmery eyeshadow, and apply the product on the inner corner of your eyes.
This method is great for those who are going for a simple look and don't want to wear eyeshadow, as highlighting only the inner corners of your eyes will help make them pop while keeping your look natural.
