In beauty and fashion, style is ever-evolving as trends come and go. According to Medium, there's also a "20-Year Rule" that applies to these industries. The rule is that what's popular 20 years ago will be popular again in another 20. True enough, '90's beauty and fashion trends are making a comeback in 2021.

As the fashion industry welcomes back '90s trends like claw clips, scrunchies, cardigans, combat boots and wide legged pants, the beauty industry is a touch more selective. Below are several '90s beauty trends that this generation is open to trying.

'90s Beauty Trends Making A Comeback

Smudged Black Eyeliner

According to beauty authorities Allure and Glamour, smudgy black eyeliner is back. This grunge influence was a staple of '90s supermodel Kate Moss and was also seen on the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow and Winona Ryder. Pop-rock singer Avril Lavigne carried the trend through the early 2000s. 2021 saw the comeback of the smudge black eyeliner trend in New York, Paris, and Milan Fashion Week.

To replicate this trend, line your eyes generously with a soft and blendable eye pencil like Kulfi Underlined Kajal Liner, Urban Decay 24-7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Perversion, or IT Cosmetics Superhero No-Tug Sharpenable Gel Eyeliner in Super Black. Angelina Jolie, Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Reese Witherspoon, The Spice Girls and Christina Aguilera all wore blue eyeshadow in the '90s. While the shades varied from light to moody, today's beauty junkies are more likely to stick to a muted shade of denim blue. Jolie sported denim blue eyelids in the 1998 Golden Globe Awards. To replicate her look, Allure recommends Kosas 10-Second Eyeshadow in Nitrogen, Colourpop Blue Moon Shadow Palette or Huda Beauty Obsessions Eyeshadow Palette in Sapphire Obsessions.

Fresh Faced Glow

At the Milan Fashion Week, models on the Fendi and Alberta Ferretti runways had barely-there makeup reminiscent of Christy Turlington. For this trend, proper skin care triumphs over makeup for that natural healthy glow. However, you can still fake it with L'oreal Paris True Match Lumi Glotion Natural Glow Enhancer.

Brown Lipstick

Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey, Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford favored brown lipstick in the '90s. It's still as wearable today as it was then. Who What Wear's top universally flattering brown lipstick picks are Nars Audacious Lipstick in Aya, Revlon Super Lustrous in Hot Chocolate and Glossier Generation G Sheer Matte Lipstick in Leo.

Pink lipstick was commonly seen on 90's pop starts like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera and '90s "It" girl Alicia Silverstone. Pink is now one of the trending lipstick colors for spring, a welcome departure from darker winter colors. Cosmopolitan suggests Tower 28 Beauty ShineOn Jelly Lip Gloss in Fearless or XOXO.
