Rita Wilson, underwent a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery after being diagnosed with breast cancer.
The "Mamma Mia" producer disclosed her medical condition in an exclusive statement to People, Tuesday.
The 58-year-old celebrity said she's 'blessed' with having the love and support of her husband, Tom Hanks plus friends, family and doctors.
"Last week, with my husband by my side, and with the love and support of family and friends, I underwent a bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction for breast cancer after a diagnosis of invasive lobular carcinoma," Wilson said, according to the report of USA Today.
The "Sleepless In Seattle" actress said she had an underlying condition of lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) and after two breast biopsies, pleomorphic carcinoma in situ (PLCIS) was found.
Pathology showed no signs of cancer. However, one of her friends who had breast cancer told her to get a second opinion.
"A different pathologist found invasive lobular carcinoma," Wilson stated. "His diagnosis of cancer was confirmed by, yet, another pathologist."
Wilson took leave from the play "Fish in the Dark" to deal with personal health issues, Time has learned.
"I am recovering and most importantly, expected to make a full recovery. Why? Because I caught this early, have excellent doctors and because I got a second opinion," the "Good Wife" actress said.
The "Girls Night In" singer recently posted a message in her Facebook account saying that a second opinion is vital to one's health.
According to "The Trap" director, early diagnosis is the key.
"You have nothing to lose if both opinions match up for the good, and everything to gain if something that was missed is found, which does happen," Wilson explained.
"I hope this will encourage others to get a second opinion and to trust their instincts if something doesn't 'feel' right," she concluded.
Wilson, after taking a break, will return to the Broadway play on May 5.
