Sony is releasing a limited edition PlayStation 4 20th Anniversary Edition to celebrate the landmark birthday of its original gaming console, according to IGN.
The very first PlayStation was released 20 years ago on December 3, 1994 in Japan, and the PlayStation 4 20th Anniversary Edition will be available in the very same gray-colored finish as its ancestor. Only 12,300 models will be produced and sold worldwide.
"Today is a very special moment in our history. It's been 20 years since the launch of the original PlayStation, which released in Japan on 3rd December, 1994," says Shuhei Yoshida, President of Worldwide Studios for Sony.
"Sony Computer Entertainment, founded by my mentor Ken Kutaragi, was a project borne out of sincere passion and deep admiration for the craft of game development. We sincerely thank you for joining us on our exciting 20-year journey. You have made every bump and scrape we took along the way worthwhile."
Yoshida added that the PlayStation 4 20th Anniversary Edition would be packaged in a commemorative box and limited to only 12,300 units to reflect the launch date of the original version of their gaming console.
Alejandro Alba of the NY Daily News says Sony has not yet made it known exactly where people can purchase these limited edition PS4 consoles, but revealed that aside from the grey color finish, the PS4 will also have the classic "P" logo on the front as well as a "20th Anniversary" badge in the corner.
As Yoshida said in his blog post, "Given this very limited production run, the 20th Anniversary Edition will not be available via traditional retail channels in the SCEE region. Look out for more information soon on how you can get your hands on one of these highly collectable consoles."
Those looking to buy the console will need to wait until Sony goes onstage for its PlayStation Experience presentation in Las Vegas, due this Saturday, to get more information how to order.
