Pop singer Katy Perry is set to perform at the Super Bowl XLIX halftime show this season, Billboard reports. The musical event will be held on February 1, 2015 at University of Phoenix Stadium in Phoenix, AZ.
Perry officially announced the news on Twitter, saying "My band is in the other room screaming at the TV (and each other) over this Cowboys-Giants game. Can't wait for February 1st..."
The "Dark Horse" singer also replied to tweets from the accounts of NBC's Sunday Night Football and the National Football League (NFL), saying: "Yeppers! And I've already started testing out ideas!"
The news was announced by Bob Costas on NBC's Sunday Night Football, according to NFL.com.
Immediately after the news broke, Pepsi, the official sponsor of the musical event, released a teaser called "There Since The First #Halftime" which features Perry's 2010 hit "Firework." A video featuring Perry speaking about her excitement for the halftime show was also posted online.
Rumors about Perry being the star of this season's halftime show started swirling when a piece from the Wall Street Journal in August named the artists contending for the coveted spot. The report also mentioned how the NFL asked the artists to pay for the spot.
Perry said she was not the type of artist to pay for a slot at the Super Bowl in an interview with ESPN's College Game Day in early October but hinted at her stint a week later in a Tweet.
On October 13, Perry shared a post to her more than 60 million followers on Twitter that said: "Ahh, Sunday... Nothing but sitting on the couch, watching my new favorite sport..." along with an emoji of a football.
Perry will join the roster of noteworthy entertainers who have performed for the halftime show that includes Madonna, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, U2, Prince and Beyonce.
