The 18th annual Hollywood Film Awards officially kicked off the awards season with its Friday event at the Hollywood Palladium, hosted by Queen Latifah and televised live for the first time ever, reports The Wrap.
David Fincher's "Gone Girl" received the honor as Hollywood Top Film of 2014, as well as two other prizes - for Hollywood Sound (won by Ren Klyce), and Hollywood Screenwriter (won by Gillian Flynn).
Benedict Cumberbatch won the Hollywood Top Actor prize for his role as Alan Turing in "The Imitation Game". The movie also received three more awards during the evening - for Hollywood Supporting Actress, which was won by Cumberbatch's co-star Keira Knightley; Hollywood Film Composer for Alexandre Desplat, and Hollywood Director which was won by Morten Tyldum.
Cumberbatch dedicated his top actor award to Turing, the gay mathematician and computer scientist whom he portrayed in the film. "He was and is a hero of all time. A gay icon who didn't deny his nature, his being... a war hero, and the father of the modern computing age."
Knightley praised her co-star in "The Imitation Game", saying that Cumberbatch was "excellent" as Alan Turing. Knightley played Joan Clarke, Turing's lifelong friend and the only female member of the code-breaking team that cracked the Enigma code during World War II.
"It was such a passion project for everyone," said Knightley about the film. "Joan was such an inspiring woman and she was a joy to play."
Robert Downey Jr. was on hand to present the award for Hollywood Supporting Actor to his co-actor Robert Duvall in "The Judge". Shailene Woodley won the Hollywood Breakout award for her role in "The Fault in Our Stars", which was presented to her by Laura Dern, reports The Examiner.
