Actor Benedict Cumberbatch explained the reason why he and fiancee Sophie Hunter opted for a traditional engagement announcement at the premiere of "The Imitation Game," People reports.
The "Sherlock" actor said he would have done the same thing if he weren't in the industry he is in right now. He also mentioned how he wanted the announcement to be more personal.
"I wanted to have some control over the message," the actor said. "I would rather do what we did, and have people find it, and not see us from some s***ty, grainy footage staring lovingly into each other's eyes with a ring on someone's finger. I wanted it to be ours."
The actor also gushed about the support they got from fans after announcing their decision.
"One of the most incredible things about getting engaged, which we had no idea would be coming back our way, is the amount of love that just comes flooding back," Cumberbatch said.
He continued, "I thought it was just all about us declaring that we were in love and getting married, but actually it's the world going, 'We love you too!' It's amazing. Family, friends, the world ... it's amazing."
Cumberbatch and Hunter's engagement was announced on Nov. 5, through the Forthcoming Marriages section of The Times UK, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The announcement read: "Mr. BT. Cumberbatch and Miss S.I. Hunter: The engagement is announced between Benedict, son of Wanda and Timothy Cumberbatch of London, and Sophie, daughter of Katherine Hunter of Edinburgh and Charles Hunter of London."
The news was later confirmed by Cumberbatch's representative but no additional information was divulged.
The pair met in 2009 when they worked together in "Burlesque Fairytales," according to Daily Mail UK, and were first spotted together in public when they watched the French Open in June.
