In the recent episode of "The Walking Dead," titled "Self Help," Eugene (Josh McDermitt) confessed that he is not a scientist and he was just lying about knowing the cure for the zombie apocalypse so that total strangers would protect him. While the revelation was devastating most especially for Abraham (Michael Cudlitz), who had spent the last two years trying to bring Eugene to Washington D.C., the big question now is where this group goes from there.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, McDermitt sort of implied that they are returning to Father Gabriel's church with the hope that they will meet Rick's (Andrew Lincoln) group on their way back.
"Glenn (Steven Yeun) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan) were talking about meeting up with the group at some point down the road," the 36-year-old actor said. "Abraham certainly left Rick a map of their journey. I don't think the group is that far behind them."
"Whether the group is following them or not, I'm not saying, but they're not too far away," he added. "
"Even after the bus crashed, Eugene said the church was just 15 miles behind them."
Alternatively, the group might also keep heading to Washington D.C. since Eugene mentioned that the federal district would be a safe place, basically because it is the capital of the country.
However, between the two options, it is less likely that they would continue heading to the capital since the rest of the group is now having some trust issues with the fake scientist.
"I think no matter what he says now, people aren't going to listen to him," McDermitt told TV Guide of his character.
Also, the group has to face a massive wall of walkers if they still choose to go to Washington.
While only time could tell what their next move would be, McDermitt teased to Yahoo TV that the group would "right away" figure out what their next mission would be.
"The intensity continues," McDermitt said of what fans can expect leading up to the show's midseason finale. "These last couple of episodes have not necessarily been the throat-slitting intensity that we had in the first episode, but now that everything's kind of been flipped on its head... we got to peek into what's going on in Beth's world, and now we see what's going on in this group."
"Everyone's going to have to pick up the pieces now that Eugene [confessed]," he added. "They need to figure out what the mission is now, and they figure it out right away and get after it. I can't wait for people to see the rest of the season."
