In the previous episode of "The Walking Dead" titled "Slabtown," Beth (Emily Kinney) found herself at a hospital surrounded by a group of twisted people including power tripping police officer Dawn (Christine Woods), sexually abusive cop Gorman (Cullen Moss) and deceitful doctor Edwards (Erik Jensen). But there was one person she considered an ally, and that was fellow patient Noah (Tyler James Williams).
Beth and Noah teamed up to escape from the hospital, but only Noah made it.
Kinney and Williams recently talked to Yahoo TV and explained why their characters instantly clicked.
"I love that speech Noah gave: 'They think I'm scrawny, they think I'm weak... they don't know sh-- about me,'" Kinney, 29, said. "I feel like that is how Beth feels, and that's how Beth has felt since Season 3, even parts of Season 2. They think she's a certain way, but there is so much more going on in Beth's head."
"Beth connects with him instantly, because they just really come from a similar place," the singer-actress explained. "And Beth wants to trust people. Even Edwards, I think that she wants to understand and wants to trust him. But then just too many things are going wrong."
Williams agreed to Kinney, saying that Beth and Noah have a lot of similarities. "They have a commonality in the fact that they're survivors, and they're underestimated," the 22-year-old "Everybody Hates Chris" star said. "Here are two people who you wouldn't necessarily think, during the apocalypse, would just make it. You know Noah has a limp, and Beth... she had that conversation with Daryl (Norman Reedus) saying, 'I'm not like everyone else, and I know that, but I'm still going to make it.'"
"It's really just that, the nice commonality with the two of them. And also, them being around the same age adds a lot to it as well," Williams added.
Though Beth failed to escape, she was glad that Noah was able to run away. "Even though she is not able to get away, she's very happy to have helped Noah," Kinney told TV Guide. I think that even though she's captured in that moment, she realizes that they don't have the same kind of power over her. She knows what's going on, she doesn't agree with it, and she's not going to play the game."
During a recent interview, Entertainment Weekly pointed out to Williams that Noah seemed to have ditched Beth at the end of their great escape. In response, the New York-born actor said, "I actually had the same thought when I read the script."
"[But] Now that they have a better understanding of each other, Beth knows that if he doesn't go first, he's not going to make it," Williams explained. "It's really sad that that's the way it happened. But Noah has some loyalties to him."
Williams confirmed to Yahoo TV that viewers will see Noah again.
