Neil Patrick Harris will host a new hour-long variety program based on Britain's hit television variety show "Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway," NBC announced Monday, Los Angeles Times reported.

The primetime show has yet to receive an official title or air date but NBC stated that Harris's upcoming show will be filmed in front of a live audience and will include "comedy sketches, musical numbers, mini game shows, hidden camera pranks on celebrities and appearances by A-list stars."

Variety shows used to be a staple on television during the 1960's and 70's and NBC is betting that Harris can resurrect the variety show, New York Daily News has learned. There has been talk for years that Harris would be a prime candidate to host a variety program, and the actor stated that he would love to bring back an Ed Sullivan-style program to television.

Harris also praised "Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway" and said he enjoyed watching previous episodes.

"As I watched the show, I couldn't stop smiling. Not that I've seen many seasons, my face hurts. It's a game-changer," Harris said. "Nothing like this has been done before, and I can't wait to roll up my sleeves and have some fun."

Multiple broadcast networks are actively bidding for the rights to land the Harris-hosted series, according to Vulture.

ITV Studios America is asking networks to agree to an on-air, 10-episode show and a price tag north of $2.5 million for each hour-long episode, excluding fees for marketing and promotion. Harris' show is also expected to originate from New York City.

NBC's Paul Telegdy told Vulture that he's been looking to get a variety series on their network for a long time and that Harris was at the top of their list of potential hosts. He also confirmed that the show will not air on Saturdays and a date, time and title was yet to be determined.

"We're not going to rush this," Telegdy said. "We'll take our time and make a great show."
