Warner Bros. Entertainment is searching for a female director to helm their upcoming 2017 Wonder Woman movie, The Empire stated.
Gal Gadot, from the "The Fast and the Furious" movie franchise, is all set to star as Wonder Woman in Warners' upcoming film. This will mark Warners' first film featuring a DC comics superheroine, and they are currently looking for a female director to help them and Gadot bring the story to life on screen.
Warner's announcement of their search for a female director comes after the release of the full list of upcoming DC movies they will be making within the next decade, The Hollywood Reporter stated.
Warner's CEO, Kevin Tsujihara, unveiled on Oct. 15 their 10-movie slate of superhero films, dropping the names of DC comic books entities such as Aquaman, Suicide Squad, The Flash, Justice League and more.
"DC will be a key engine for growth across all Warner Bros.," Tsujihara said.
The decision of Warner Bros. to change things up with a female director was in response to criticism that "superhero films are ruled by males", the Inquisitr reports.
Critics have accused Hollywood of its lack of diversity in main characters and claimed that DC plans to break the mold.
Warner wants to "up the ante" when it comes to putting out diverse films, accordig to several sources. Having a female director join their ranks is one of their first steps into achieving that goal.
Should their plan follow through, it will be the first time a female director will lead a project of this magnitude, something that rival company Marvel has yet to do.
The alleged shortlist of names is making waves online, according to Forbes.
The list includes Kathryn Bigelow of "The Hurt Locker" and "Zero Dark Thirty," Catherine Hardwicke of "Twilight," Julie Taymor of "Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark," Michelle MacLaren of the television shows "The Walking Dead" and "Game of Thrones" and more as possible choices to direct the film.
Warner Bros. Entertainment's Wonder Woman film is tentatively scheduled to hit theaters on June 2017.
