Microsoft has released an update to its Skype app for the iPhone, offering an optimized interface that takes advantage of the new iPhone 6's larger displays, reports CNET. The update allows for more information to be seen in both the chat window and in conversation mode.
The iPhone 6, launched just last September, features a 4.7-inch screen, with the bigger iPhone 6 Plus carrying a 5.5-inch screen. The Skype 5.6 update is configured to let iPhone 6 owners see more information on their screens while using the app on their iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus devices.
The official word from the Skype website says their latest update "brings optimized, scaled UI to the larger iPhone 6 and iPhone 6+ screen sizes. On an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6+, Skype 5.6 displays more of your recent chats and shows more messages in conversation view, helping you to communicate with your friends and family quickly and simply."
PC Mag's Angela Moscaritolo provides more information regarding the update, saying it also serves up other "minor tweaks and improvements", which include notification sounds being disabled when the user sets the phone in "Do Not Disturb" mode, and being able to mark specific conversations as "read" or "unread".
Robin Sinha of NDTV writes that there are "options to choose whether to answer the calls via video or voice, or to return the call, or reply in text for missed calls, were also included. Users could access the above options by swiping towards the left from the lock screen or the drop down notifications panel."
"Also, Skype brought back support for voice messaging and profiles in version 5.2 for iPhone. These features had been removed by the company when it had launched Skype 5.0 'Remastered for iPhone', in June."
Sheldon Pinto of Tech Tree, however, thinks that Microsoft "always seems to update the iOS app for frequently than its Windows Phone apps which is a bit strange, but it does come as good news for iPhone 6 owners because their larger smartphone displays are now supported."
