The intensively private romance between Padma Lakshmi and Richard Gere is now over.
The "Top Chef" host and the "Pretty Woman" actor split after six months of dating, Page Six first reported.
A source told the New York Post's column that the two "decided they would be better as friends."
Lakshmi, 44, recently announced on TV that she was single, according to E! News. The Indian-born American cookbook author remained tight-lipped about the split during an appearance on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" Friday, Oct. 10, and on NBC's "Today" Tuesday, Oct. 14.
Lakshmi and Gere started dating in April after the Golden Globe-winning actor had broken up with Carey Lowell, his wife of 11 years.
"It started very recently and quietly. It's very new," a tipster told Us Weekly at the time. "I wouldn't even go as far as calling them a couple. They are dating. It's the first time Padma has dated anyone since Teddy [Forstmann, who died in 2011], and it's something she's been approaching very, very delicately."
The insider added: "They're just getting to know each other. They're just having fun."
Both Lakshmi and Gere had been very busy with work lately.
Lakshmi filmed a season of her Bravo reality cooking show in Boston this summer, and has been traveling since then, Page Six reported.
Meanwhile, Gere, 65, spent the summer filming Oren Moverman's drama "Time Out of Mind," in which he plays a homeless man on the streets of New York trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter.
The film screened this past weekend as part of the New York Film Festival and the Hamptons International Film Festival.
Gere said at the Film Society of Lincoln Center last week that "Time Out of Mind" is one of the projects he is most proud of during his long career, Page Six reported.
"What probably really helped was I was right in the middle of a divorce [from Lowell], so the emotions were right on the surface," he joked at the event.
Lakshmi was married to author Salman Rushdie from 2004 to 2007. She then dated billionaire Teddy Forstmann until he died of brain cancer in 2011. Lakshmi also shares a 3-year-old daughter, Krishna Thea Lakshmi-Dell, with venture capitalist ex-boyfriend Adam Dell.
Meanwhile, Gere shares a teenage son, Homer, with estranged wife Lowell. The two separated in September 2013. The "Hachi: A Dog's Tale" actor was also previously married to supermodel Cindy Crawford from 1991 to 1995.
