Katy Perry will perform at the Super Bowl XLIX halftime show, sources confirmed to Billboard.

The 29-year-old  pop star's performance at the much coveted Super Bowl slot has been rumored since August after The Wall Street Journal claimed that the National Football League (NFL) shortlisted her along with Coldplay and Rihanna, whose "Run This Town" was abruptly axed by CBS Sports as its Thursday Night Football tune during the wake of the Ray Rice scandal.

The Wall Street Journal also had reported that the NFL was looking for artists who are willing to pay to perform at the game, since last year's broadcast drew a record-setting 111.5 million viewers and previous performers at "the biggest gig of all" have all seen major increase in sales, touring and public profile.

When informing the artist's camps that they were shortlisted to headline the most coveted show, league representatives reportedly asked at least some of the acts if they would be willing to contribute a fraction of their post-Super Bowl tour income to the league. If not, they have another option to make some other type of financial contribution, in exchange for the prestigious gig.

Sources told The Wall Street Journal that the request "got a chilly reception from the candidates' representatives."

The NFL does not usually pay artists who perform during the Super Bowl Halftime Show, but the league typically shoulders travel and production expenses, which can cost more than a million dollars, according to Rolling Stone.

But the "Roar" hitmaker slammed the reported scheme during an appearance on ESPN's "College GameDay" Saturday Oct. 4, saying, "I'm not the kind of girl who would pay to play the Super Bowl."

NFL spokeswoman Joanna Hunter noted that the league's contracts with artists are confidential.

There are a number of possible reasons why Perry was chosen to play at the sports event, and that include her current chart-topping hits, her largely family-friendly catalog, and her international popularity, according to Billboard.

Super Bowl XLIX takes place outside of Phoenix and airs on NBC on Feb. 1, 2015.
