Jessica Chastain was also a victim of bullying growing up.
The 37-year-old actress, who graces the Glamour magazine's November issue, opened up to the publication about how she spent her childhood being bullied by classmates.
"[As a child] I was told every day at school that I was ugly. And that no one wanted to be my friend. The most cruel things," the Oscar-nominated actress revealed. "If I can do anything to help young girls and to be a cheerleader for people who sometimes have low self-esteem, I want to do that."
And although she was a late-bloomer, the Sacramento, California-born thespian said that she is thankful that she did not become popular at a very young age.
"I would have been a disaster," she said. "If I was 19 and I had the attention that I'm getting now, I would have just said stupid things. I would have partied more. All these expensive dinners and people giving me champagne? All these stupid things that we criticize 19-year-olds for doing when they're famous, I would have done."
Chastain, who received wide critical acclaim for her lead performance in the controversial 2012 military thriller film "Zero Dark Thirty," also explained to the women's magazine why she tries her best to keep her love life private.
"I think it's important not to talk about it," she said of her love life. "In the future I will. If everything continues on a path, of course it'll be part of the conversation. But until it gets there, I don't want to put any unexpected pressure on something that is so personal and so precious. It's too delicate right now."
Chastain was in a long-term relationship with film director Ned Benson before breaking up in 2010, according to Vulture.
In February last year, a source told Us Weekly that Chastain is in a relationship with Gian Luca Passi de Preposulo, an Italian-born executive for French fashion brand Moncler.
"They've been dating seriously for awhile now and Gian really likes her," the tipster dished. "He is a classy guy and completely agrees about respecting their relationship and not flaunting it."
Chastain can next be seen in films "Interstellar" and "A Most Violent Year," which are due on Nov. 5 and Dec. 31, respectively.
