Jordin Sparks and boyfriend Jason Derulo have pulled the plug in their relationship, an insider told People.
The split was reportedly mutual and the two have decided to remain friends as they still very deeply care for each other.
"They are both upset. It just wasn't working out," a source told Us Weekly. "It was a lot of travel and hard to work with their schedules."
The news of the break up came quite a surprise as the pair reportedly looked very much in love when they attended the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards together just late last month.
They even sparked engagement rumors last year when Derulo released "Marry Me," a song inspired by their real-life romance. Sparks, 24, also appeared on the music video of the track.
"It is about Jordin, actually," the 25-year-old crooner told E! News of the single at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards. "And it's talking about how amazing it will be when I get down on one knee and it will be the greatest moment of my life."
"You can't fake anything because true love is true love, and that's the basis of our relationship," he added.
The two were first romantically linked in September 2011, although the "Watcha Say" singer only confirmed their romance in January 2012. Both have since been open about their love and affection for each other on the red carpet, social media and interviews.
"I thoroughly enjoy being with her all the time, it just kind of work," Derulo previously told Hollywood Life.
He also previously gushed to E! News about how his girlfriend helped him recover after he broke his vertebrae back in January 2012, and how he realized after the incident that Jordin was the one.
"Of course we have our problems just like anybody else," he admitted to E! News last month. "But our relationship is a positive one and that's good for people to see in today's entertainment industry."
"You really see the people you love and you go, I don't want to lose you," the "American Idol" season 6 winner told Us Weekly in Oct. 2012 of Derulo's accident.
However, it seemed that the pair would no longer be saying "I do" any time soon as Sparks reportedly hinted a possible break up when she tweeted "I just wrote the saddest song of my life" on Sept. 15.
