John Meyer, a 19-year-old app maker, has declined job offers from prominent tech companies such as Apple, Business Insider reported.
Meyer, who dropped out from New York University to work on his startup company Fresco News, gained the attention of tech giants due to his success as an app developer.
One of his creations, the Just Light, is an app for the iPhone 4 that turns the light from the flash of the device's camera into a flashlight. The app has been downloaded over 2 million times.
Meyer's other work, the Perfect Shot, was released last year for the iOS 7.Perfect Shot works with the iPhone camera's eye and smile detection features. It takes pictures at the exact time when everyone is smiling and no one in the group is blinking, according to Efy Times.
Downloads for Perfect Shot reached 60,000 in only four days after its release.
His company, Fresco News, utilizes features of Twitter, Instagram and Flipboard to collect photos of big happenings uploaded by users. These photos are then used to create online news articles.
Due to his technology creativity, he was approached by Apple to participate in its Internship program. Despite being offered the opportunity to work with one of the world's largest tech companies and earn almost $6,000 a month, Meyer turned down the offer.
"I get emails from recruiters all the time, and this past summer an offer to intern at Apple," he said.
Meyer said he decided not to take the offer because he doesn't feel comfortable working under a supervisor.
"I am, at heart, an entrepreneur," Meyer explained. "I won't be happy working for someone else. If I wanted to, I'm sure they would offer me another internship."
As for his future, he is still pondering if he will return to college to finish his studies. But for now, Meyer is totally happy creating apps for profit and for personal entertainment, Tech Times reported.
Although he didn't reveal how much he earns, Meyer said it's more than enough.
"Let's just say it's on par with what software engineers earn at some of the best tech companies," he said.
