Actor Charlie Hunnam was recently interviewed by Moviefone where he revealed his real reason behind quitting "50 Shades of Grey."
"I just had, frankly, something of a nervous breakdown. I bit off more than I could chew and it was painful. I loved the character and I wanted to do it," he said.
Hunnam was previously cast to play the role of Christian Grey in the hit series by British author E.L. James. However, at that time, he was also busy filming for "Sons of Anarchy" and admitted that he was pressured to prepare for the role and juggle his other engagements because he was pressed for time, according to Examiner.
"I wouldn't have signed up in the first place if I didn't want to do it. It was a really, really difficult time in my life. I had already been attached to 'Crimson Peak' for about 14 months, which I said, I was going to do with director Guillermo del Toro," he explained to US Weekly.
The 34-year-old actor also shared how he and "50 Shades of Grey" director Sam Taylor-Johnson just fell in love creatively, MTV News reported.
"Sam and I just fell in love, creatively. We started talking about this thing and I just felt so excited. I fell in love with the character and started seeing him and becoming intoxicated, which is the way I work; I find a character I love and I start thinking about it all the time," he said.
However, two months after he was confirmed for the role back in September of last year, Hunnam dropped out of the film.
"I just said, 'I can't, I can't....' To fail on such a grand scale - because 'Fifty's' going to be massive, it's going to be huge. I really didn't want to fail on such a grand scale, and I just couldn't transition from my 'Sons of Anarchy' character Jax Teller to Christian Grey in 48 hours. It's painful because I love the character and I wanted to do it. I'm also a man of my word."
