Charlie Hunnam may be heading to Camelot as soon as he finished filming the seventh and final season of the hit FX crime drama series "Sons of Anarchy."
The 34-year-old British actor is Guy Ritchie's choice to play King Arthur in the upcoming Warner Bros. film series "Knights of the Roundtable: King Arthur," which is intended to have six installments, Deadline reported.
The said Warner Bros. project is a reimagining of the story of King Arthur and his legendary knights of the kingdom of Camelot. Ritchie is directing from a script by Joby Harold. Akiva Goldsman is producing through Weed Road with Harold and Tory Tunnell through Safehouse Pictures, and Ritchie's partner Lionel Wigram.
Niija Kuykendall and Cate Adams are overseeing the project for Warner Bros., The Hollywood Reporter noted.
Hunnam, who is now in final negotiations to play the title role, recently read for the part long with Henry Cavill and Jai Courtney, according to Variety.
Hunnam's "Pacific Rim" co-star Idris Elba is also said to be in talks to play Bedivere, the right-hand man of Arthur's father's right-hand man, who will teach Arthur how to lead an army, according to THR.
Deadline, however, reported that Elba is circling the role of Merlin, a wizard in the Arthurian legend.
Earlier this month, it was rumored that Ritchie was desperate to cast Jamie Dornan for the title role.
The 45-year-old "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" director is said to have been "blown away" when he met the 32-year-old Northern Irish actor, and is keen to sign him up for the project, according to The Sun.
Striking a deal with the hunk, however, could be tough because of his commitment to three installments of the film adaptation of E.L. James' best-selling erotic novel series "Fifty Shades of Grey."
"Jamie is hot property in Hollywood," a source told The Sun. "Guy was completely blown away when he met him and wanted to offer the part immediately."
Hunnam was once attached to play Christian Grey, but ended up leaving the project, and was replaced by Dornan.
The King Arthur film series is said to be a better post-"Sons of Anarchy" project for Hunnam than playing
"Fifty Shades of Grey's" Christian Grey, a role that is more suited to a newcomer than an established actor on the cusp of movie stardom, according to Deadline's Mike Fleming Jr.
