Nobumichi Asai, a projection artist from Tokyo, Japan, has developed a way to use computer-generated imagery (CGI) to put digital makeup on models, CNet reported.

Asai's technological innovation makes use of the Omote projection mapping software to apply electronic cosmetics.

It begins by first tracking the face of the model in real time using laser-scanning technology. With the data collected from the scanning procedure, Asai creates a 3D mesh that serves as the frame of the projection map.

He then overlays the graphics-based makeup on the subject. By constantly manipulating the CGI cosmetics, Asai is able to project the makeup to the model's face even when she's moving. This is made possible through small dots placed on the model's face.

Before digitizing the beauty industry, Asai previously used projection mapping technology to buildings and cars of corporate giants such as Intel and Subaru. Using the same technique, he scanned the exterior of the objects before projecting CGI designs.

The main difference, however, is that his previous work mainly involved stationary objects. After perfecting his mapping technique, Asai decided to move forward with living subjects.

The project is still in its early stages and the practical applications of the technology are still unclear, according to The Week. However, the site speculated that it could revolutionize cosmetics companies by expanding their methods on testing different shades, colors and styles of makeup.

It can also be applied to the film and television industry through projecting different facial images for the actors.

Asai's project makes use of the same technology and technique as Microsoft's IllumiRoom for the Xbox consoles, Slash Gear reported.

First unveiled in April of last year, IllumiRoom is an immersive gaming system that projects a video game's environment onto the player's room.

It maps out a room's features such as its furniture and geography in 3D before projecting game elements such as falling snow around the player.
