Nobody was more hurt by the shocking death of Cory Monteith than his mother Ann McGregor and for the first time since the untimely death of her late son she has decided to open up about her loss.

According to Us Weekly, McGregor, 63, sat down for an interview with ABC News' Bianna Golodryga.

The chat was aired on "Good Morning America" on Thursday morning, July 17th and was filmed earlier that week in McGregor's hometown of Vancouver, British Columbia.

The devastated mother of the "Glee" star said, "The loss is horrendous," adding, "Until three days ago I couldn't look at a picture of Cory... So there's been progress."

Ann McGregor's interview comes after the one year anniversary of Monteith's death which was on July 13, 2013 at the age of 31 in Vancouver.

The autopsy revealed that Lea Michele's former boyfriend's cause of death was a "mixed drug toxicity," which included heroin and alcohol.

Reflecting on her son's life McGregor said, "[When] Cory was 15, he did a code blue, and I think that was the turning point," adding, "He had a lot of emotional things he was trying to figure out -- lot of it was he really wanted a relationship with his father.

"I think when a child gets invalidated they keep reaching even harder. They want to find out why."

After their divorce Monteith's father Joe Monteith became estranged from the family and in turn was not invited to attend his son's funeral.

Ann McGregor revealed that she still speaks to her son's former girlfriend Lea Michele over text messages and emails.

She confessed, "She's hurting too... you see the sadness. I know her pain."

Although she is devastated about her son's death the mourning mother admitted that no one in Cory Monteith's life was able to help him.

She explained, "I don't think we have power to change the choices they're making," adding, "I think with the kind of connection Cory and I had, if we couldn't prevent that situation, I don't have the answer."
