Laverne Cox is known for playing Sophia Burset on Netflix's "Orange is the New Black," a role that earned her an Emmy nomination and made her the first openly transgender women to be nominated. She celebrated in style at an exclusive Justin Timberlake concert.
"I got to meet the president, I have an Emmy nomination and I can afford to redecorate my apartment. I have a publicist who connected this call. Everything is different," the inspiring star said in a statement. "My whole life has changed. People recognize me wherever I go. Nothing is the same it was last year."
Cox is nominated for Best Guest Actress in a Comedy Series, and credits director Jodie Foster for her honor, who directed Sophia's flashback story in season one.
"I think this nomination happened because of Jodie, honestly," the actress explained. "That was a dream come true for me, as an actor. Who didn't grow up watching Jodie Foster movies? I would rewind tapes to see what she did. This performance in Episode 3 happened because of her."
When asked what she would wear on the big day, Cox replied, "Oh my God, I don't know! know I need to go to the gym! I hope someone wants to dress me, maybe."
We are sure she'll have no trouble finding someone!
The transgender star opened up to The Advocate about growing up transgender, and how she came to accept her true self.
There was all this fear that I would end up gay or whatever, and there was a lot of homophobia in my hometown. Surprise, surprise," she said of her Mobile, Alabama home.
"Your son is going to end up in New Orleans wearing a dress if you don't get him into therapy right away," she recalled a teacher telling her mother.
Cox focused on her schoolwork and planning for her future, and moved to New York. She met fellow transgender Tina Sparkles, who was a great influence on her.
"Watching her and other trans women transition, I thought 'this is who I am.' And I was terrified," she revealed.
She admitted she was transgender for the first time in her doctor's office before her first hormone shot.
"I never really said that before, and owning that was just a relief," Cox explained. "I feel like it was something I'd been running away from my whole life, something I'd been fighting and trying not to be and trying to negotiate, instead of just trying to be who I am."
