It was a scary morning for Michael Strahan! NYPD officials told TMZ the "Live With Kelly and Michael" host was threatened by a homeless man with a knife. The incident occurred at 8 a.m. in Times Square, where "Good Morning America" is shot. Strahan makes appearances on the broadcast in addition to "Live."
The suspect was identified as Andre Johnson, 25, who argued with security and threatened to stab a guard. He said he was there to kill the former NFL star. A cop, working as a guard at the time, subdued the criminal and secured the knife.
Johnson was arrested for felony attempted assault, menacing in the second degree, and criminal possession of a weapon. He is reportedly being held without bail.
ABC issued a statement regarding the incident, reading:
"There was an incident in Times Square, an individual lunged at one of our employees and was heroically tackled by a police officer. We understand the man was taken in for psychiatric evaluation," explained Senior Publicity Director at ABC News Heather Riley.
"It was a scary situation but thanks to the fast actions of NYPD the situation was quickly under control. Michael was never in any danger."
Strahan has yet to comment on the matter, but his fiancé Nicole Murphy told photographers at LAX he's "doing good."
She also joked, "Michael probably shook up the homeless guy."
Murphy was understandably worried for Strahan, but insisted he was fine. She believes he needs more security, as "there's crazy people out there."
