Rosie O'Donnell has been asked to come back to "The View," according to Fox411. This comes on the heels of Sherri Shepherd and Jenny McCarthy being axed from the ABC talk show.
"The network executives really wanted Rosie back," a source told the network. "They're confident she has what it takes to add some controversy and drive the ratings up. It is a smart fit."
Other officials at ABC state "there is a lot of rumor and speculation about who will be joining the show," but no decisions have been made and the network is "not ready to make any announcements."
O'Donnell left the show in 2007 after only one season.
"My needs for the future just didn't dovetail with what ABC was able to offer me," she said in a statement at the time.
"They wanted me three years, I wanted one year and it just didn't work," she said then. "I'm not sad - I loved it here."
Shepherd released a statement to Deadline regarding her departure, reading:
"It's been seven wonderful years on "The View" and after careful consideration it is time for me to move on. I am extremely grateful to Barbara Walters and Bill Gedde for giving me the opportunity. I look forward to the business opportunities that lay ahead for me and I am incredibly grateful to my "View" family and my fans for supporting me on this journey."
McCarthy sent a message to her followers yesterday, saying, "If Sherri goes...I go to. #sisters."
She followed up with, "My View will be changing too. As will with many hard working folks. Thanks to everyone at the show for your dedication and an amazing year."
Whoopi Goldberg is still in place to host the show's next season.
