"Spring Breakers" raised eyebrows around the world with its controversial nature, and now it's time for round two! Though things will be different this time around, "Spring Breakers: The Second Coming," is sure to provoke the same reaction!
The original flick showed a group of college girls (Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, and Rachel Korine) who venture down to Florida for fun in the sun. Their trip took a racy turn when they meet crazy local, Alien (played by James Franco), and becomes a sexy adventure.
"Spring Breakers: The Second Coming," written by Irvine Welsh, will be brought on by production company Wild Bunch. Original director Harmony Korine has stepped down and Swedish filmmaker Jonas Akerlund will take on the role.
Wild Bunch said at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival the sequel is about "the Spring Breakers doing battle with an extreme militant Christian sect that attempts to convert them."
Vincent Maraval, Co-Chief of Wild Bunch, added in Screen that "It's not a direct sequel although there are allusions to some of the characters in the original."
"Casting is being finalised. It's a very intelligent script but it's also pure Verhoeven, extremely erotic and perverted, so the actress has to be prepared to take that on."
It is unclear if any original cast mates will return, though Franco hinted to MTV back in September that there could be a sequel.
"When we were making the movie, there was talk of a prequel. My character and Gucci Mane's character were supposed to have been former friends, so we at one time talked about, 'What was that like? Let's make that movie!'" the Broadway star stated. "So there's that. There's a prequel version, or there's the version of Alien's friend or something. I don't know."
The original "Spring Breakers" grossed $31 million at the box office.
