First Lady Michelle Obama joined forces with Vogue editor Anna Wintour this morning. She inaugurated the opening ceremony of Wintour's new costume center at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
"I'm here today because of Anna," Obama began. "I'm so impressed with Anna's contributions not just to fashion but to this great museum. This center is for anyone who cares about fashion and how it impacts our culture and history."
The first lady stunned in a long-sleeved Naeem Khan dress with a tan base and green floral pattern. Fashion moguls in attendance included the likes of Sarah Jessica Parker and Victoria Beckham.
Other big-shot designers, according to Business Week, included Calvin Klein, Michael Kors, Donatella Versace, Carolina Herrera, Tory Burch, Marc Jacobs, Victoria Beckham, Donna Karan, Zac Posen, Ralph Lauren, Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen of The Row, Reed Krakoff, Prabal Gurung and the Mulleavy sisters of Rodarte.
Wintour has raised millions for the cause, which opens to the public on Thursday, May 8. It features the work of Charles James, the first American couturier.
James was not well-known in the public eye, yet was a staple in the fashion industry. The show, "Charles James: Beyond Fashion," reveals every detail of what went into making his gowns.
Designer Christian Dior called him "the greatest talent of my generation."
Several attendees took to the New York Daily News to sing praises for Wintour and her work.
Nigel Barker, a fashion photographer, called the honor "well-deserved."
"I think it's amazing," he said. "It's timeless, without a doubt."
Jenna Lyons, the Creative Director of J. Crew, agreed, stating, "I'm happy this is happening now. Anna is an ambassador to the fashion industry."
