This week we honor classic beauty, Dolly Parton.
Known for her talented voice and iconic curvaceous figure, Dolly Parton is considered country music royalty. With several Grammy Awards for her music, the star has also been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and is a noteworthy actress, having starred in popular films as well.
From an early age, Parton was partial to all things beauty. The 9-year-old grew up in Sevier County, and he rmother remembers her love of beauty fondly. "If we ever had any makeup in the house," her mother once told People of the star, "Dolly'd grab it first."
When she couldn't get her hands on actual makeup products, Dolly improvised. In her memoir, the country music legend said she found other ways to beautify herself. "Until I was a teenager, I used red pokeberries for lipstick and a burnt matchstick for eyeliner," she says. "I used honeysuckle for perfume." Who knew!
For this star, full-faced makeup is an everyday thing. Parton's makeup signature is quite often the use of many different shades of bright Barbie pinks for her eyeshadows and especially her lips. The star admits to wearing makeup most often and sometimes sleeping in it in case of a beauty emergency.
When I'm touring I travel with my own wardrobe people but I do my own make-up - I've always done my own make-up," she explained. "You have to prepare yourself when you're traveling, anything can happen."
"When I'm in California, where they have earthquakes all the time, I always keep my clothes handy. I have a wig beside the bed and I leave my make-up on. I don't want to be rushed out into the street looking like hell! I know reporters would go by and then they'd be talking about it. I don't always wear wigs. I have a girl who does my hair and it looks okay if it's been rolled, but wigs are so handy."
You gotta love a gal who is comfortable in her own skin. "I have my issues like everybody else, but I work with what I have," Parton has said of her body. "And if I don't have it, I'd go out and buy it! I'll try to make that work for me. It's not about body issues for me. I am just a very outgoing person. You know how they say 'Less is more?' Well, I always say, 'More is more.' I am comfortable with myself."
