Stinson has spoken. Neil Patrick Harris, who played womanizer Barney Stinson on "How I Met Your Mother," loved the controversial series ending. SPOILERS AHEAD!
"It wasn't necessarily the happy ending that people were expecting," he admitted to David Letterman. "But Carter [Bays] and Craig [Thomas], who were once writers on your show and the executive producers and creators, knew this ending years ago and had played towards that. And I was a big proponent of it and a big fan of it."
Harris is correct, as fans were divided between thrilled and furious with the ending.
The final season appeared to conclude that Barney and Robin would be happily ever after. The same goes for Ted and the mother. The last episode brought a shocking turn of events, where Robin and Barney get divorced and the mother, Tracy McConnell, dies. She was only fully introduced this season.
Robin and Ted wind up together after years of emotional turmoil. Ted's two children, who he shares this tale with in the year 2030, are quick to pick up on his feelings for their aunt and insist they approve.
The Broadway star also weighed in on Barney and Robin's divorce.
"Sometimes people's growth doesn't really mean that they grow up," Harris explains.
"There are certain people who, you want them to get in a solid relationship and settle down and learn from things, and you want Barney to be the guy you can bring your mom home to, but Barney's the guy that wants to bang your mom. And so at the end of the day, it's not always meant to be that way."
Letterman joked he sought "professional counseling" after watching the final episode.
