According to new reports, Germany's next government has every intention on banning plastic surgery on children and minors unless the procedure can be justified on medical grounds.
On Monday, the Frankfurter Rundschau newspaper reported that Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative bloc and the Social Democrats, who are set to form a coalition government, have agreed to start work on a cosmetic surgery ban next year.
The health spokesperson for the Christian Democratic Union, Jens Spahn told Spiegel magazine, "Youth protection is also about protecting young people from the consequences of a wrong-headed beauty craze.
"Unnecessarily subjecting a young body which is still growing, to such a significant procedure can have dire consequences, both physically and mentally.
"I think it is completely unacceptable to give a 15-year-old a breast enlargement as a Christmas present. Therefore plastic surgery that is not necessary on medical grounds should be banned."
Apparently around 10 percent of the plastic surgery operations that take place in Germany are performed on people under the age of 20.
The magazine quoted Martin Spiering, a spokesman for the association who insisted that many of the procedures consisted of pinning back children's ears.
To make matters worst a survey released at the end of October showed that one in seven children between the age of 9 and 14 have thought about the option of plastic surgery in order to improve their looks.
Potential procedures mentioned include a nose job and liposuction, according to the survey from bank Bausparkasse LBS which asked 10,000 children.
