Queen Elizabeth II decreed that William and Kate Middleton's baby new title will be prince or princess and be referred to as His or Her Royal Highness.

The Letter of Patent by the Queen will change the 1917 decree by King George V, that only Prince of Wales' eldest son would be titled prince, but not the  eldisst daughter. The new Patent states: "All the children of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales should enjoy the style, title and attribute of Royal Highness with the titular dignity of Prince or Princess prefixed to their Christian names," according to BBC.

There is currently a law waiting to be voted in the House of Commons which will end centuries-old tradition of male heirs, regardless of birth order being first in line for the throne. The 16 commonwealth countries approved changes which will make first-born daughter of the Duke and Duchess take succession of the British throne over younger brothers. The new law will also allow monarch to marry Roman Catholics which was banned before.

The 300 year old succession law dating back to 1689 Bill of Rights and the Royal Marriages Act of 1772, the new law will end the principle of male 'primogeniture' sons will not take priority over daughters to the British throne.  

The Succession to the Crown Bill in the House of Commons will end gender discrimination in the succession to the throne. The bill was published in December 13, 2012 titled Succession to the Crown Act 2013.  The 16 countries which have the Queen as their head of state, known as realms, approved of this measure in Perth, Australia in 2011.
