Is Hot Water Better Than Cold Water? The Ideal Temperature for Washing Your Face, According to Skin Experts

The discussion about whether to use hot or cold water when cleansing the face has been brought back repeatedly -- and skin experts are once again reminding beauty enthusiasts about the right answer. 

Hot water defenders, claim that this opens the pores and takes out dirty oils and debris. On the flip side, cold water enjoyers assert that this makes the pores smaller and tighter.

However, both of these are false and are just myths.

"Hot water may temporarily loosen oils and debris on the skin, making pores appear cleaner, but it doesn’t actually change their size," said dermatologist Hanna Kopelman, in an interview quoted by the New York Post

Also, hot water can lead to the skin's dryness and inflammation, added the media outlet, Byrdie, making it especially a no-no for the skincare routine of those with rosacea and eczema.

Hot water is not suitable for facial wash but, cold water isn't either. Dr. Kopelman initially agreed that it could reduce the face's puffiness, and alleviate irritation and inflammation, however, it also has its downside. 

"It could lead to clogged pores and less effective skin care," she added. 

Thus, there is only one option left — and this is to use a temperature in between – or lukewarm water. 

"Lukewarm water is ideal for cleansing as it effectively removes dirt, oil, and makeup while preserving the skin’s natural oils, allowing skin care products to absorb better," touted Dr. Nicole Lee, the dermatologist told HuffPost.
