How to Master the Double Blush Trend in 3 Simple Steps

Some makeup products have a seasonal appeal. Fall and winter are almost synonymous with deeply pigmented matte lipsticks, while summer beckons a golden glow thanks to bronzers. Spring is the season of renewal and is celebrated with brightly colored flowers and equally bold blushes. However, this season, everyone's favorite makeup product is taking on a new look thanks to the double blush trend.

Year after year, we've seen the blush category evolve. What began with a simple powder progressed to cushiony creams and pigmented liquids. While one product can give you a flushed look, the double blush trend embraces multiple formulas for an intensified look. This isn't a sheer wash of color we're talking about. Instead, it's all about vibrant hues, glossy finishes, and bold placement. Below, we break down the basics of the trend, including a step-by-step guide for getting the look.

What Makes the Double Blush Trend Unique

Unlike your standard blush look, this trend relies on a combination of blush formulas. But that's just one part of the equation. The most interesting thing about this trend is that it layers cream and powder formulas and is finished with a cream or liquid product. Years of doing your makeup may have taught you that creams always come before powder, as the latter is used to set the former. But the double blush trend has flipped the script with stunning results.

Just turn to the many videos on TikTok for proof. What began as a technique honed by celebrity makeup artist Patrick Ta has turned into a full-blown phenomenon.

How to Get The Double Blush Trend Look

While using multiple blush formulas isn't new, it's safe to say that this trend took off after Ta's viral tutorial featuring his She's The Moment Double Take blush palette. In the video, the artist gave tips on application to nail the look. Here are his top takeaways.

Step 1: Apply one layer of cream blush

Per Ta's instructions, the first layer should be light and done with a pigmented cream blush. As he notes, you want to start lightly and build intensity as you continue. In this step, the cream should be applied directly to the apples of the cheeks and blended into the under-eye area.

Step 2: Add powder blush

Once the cream has been applied, it's time to go in with the powder. Using a fluffy brush, lightly dust the powder over the apples of the cheeks, sweeping up the cheekbones. This will give the cheeks an intense look that mellows toward the temples.

Step 3: Apply a second layer of cream blush

The last step is the most important for pulling off this look. Once you've applied the powder, you may notice it has blurred the skin a bit, giving it a matte effect. Here's where things get interesting. Applying a second layer of cream on top of the powder instantly melds the products together, delivering a dewy, vibrant flush. The result is a vibrant flush that gives you a lively and slightly sculpted look.
