Prince, often regarded as one of the greatest musicians of his time (and one of the most iconic in terms of style), "always wore" women's perfume.
His ex-wife, Mayte Garcia, made the revelation in a recent interview with People.
"[Prince] was very big on perfume and so was I," she told People. "I don't know if a lot of people know this about him, but he always wore women's perfumes instead of men's colognes. He had done that before I even met him."
Garcia also disclosed that the women's perfume the late star, who passed away in 2016, wore "all the time" was Dune by Dior.
"He wore Dune all the time, so I got the scent in oil form and added a little smokiness and sweetness to it. He also liked Samsara by Guerlain, and Thierry Mugler's Angel," she told the outlet. "He loved the florals. He was also into Carolina Herrera, though he couldn't wear it around me because I'm allergic to jasmine. But he always smelled amazing, even when he was onstage. He never stank!"
Listed within the women's fragrance selection on the official website of the French multinational luxury fashion house, Dune is described as an "oceanic" scent, crafted in "harmony with nature."
The notes harmonize perfectly to create a radiant, fresh, and sensual scent that "captures the landscape where the sky meets the sea in a warm, oceanic floral bouquet," as per the product description.
Dune made its debut in 1991, boasting top notes of Brazilian rosewood, aldehydes, mandarin orange, bergamot, and peony. Its heart carries enchanting notes of lily, ylang-ylang, wallflower, jasmine, and rose, while the base notes settle into a captivating blend of amber, sandalwood, benzoin, oakmoss, vanilla, patchouli, and musk, according to Fragrantica.
Garcia incorporated this scent into one of the candles she sells. She began her candle making project during the pandemic as a means to raise funds for her dog rescue mission.
"I started making them out of desperation as a way of raising money for my dog rescue mission," she told People.
"And I got really good at it! And then the first candle I made, eternal love, did really well, but there was a twist -- the smell was a perfume he wore," she added, referring to Dune.
Candles crafted by Garcia are available for purchase on the official Mayte Garcia website, and every sale contributes to her mission of finding new homes for rescue pups.
For four years, the dancer was married to Prince, and together they had a child named Amir, who sadly passed away just six days after his birth.
In honor of their son, Prince and Garcia founded the nonprofit organization Live 4 Love in 1996, and it is still overseen by the latter to this day.
