Beauty Editor Tips for Clearer Skin

Clearer skin can be yours with these practical tips from beauty editors.

Everyone wants to achieve clear skin. We spend so much on skincare products try to get rid of acne, sunspots, lines, and wrinkles when often, less is more. This is a common lesson among beauty editors. With the sheer volume of products that they get to sample day in and day out, most beauty editors have managed to edit their skincare routines for better skin. Here are the best beauty editor tips for clearer skin.

Be mindful of water temperature.

Jacqueline Kilikita of Refinery29 finds it easier to control the water temperature of a bathroom sink. That's why she doesn't cleanse her face when taking a hot shower. Washing your face with hot water can disrupt the skin barrier, and this will lead to dry, red, and oversensitive skin. However, if you're used to washing your face in the shower (who isn't) you can save it at the end when you can adjust the water after cleansing your body. Kilikita says your skin will thank you for it.

Apply conditioner mid-length.

What does your conditioner have to do with your face? Well, since conditioners are formulated with rich moisturizing ingredients for the hair, those same ingredients can block pores and lead to acne breakouts on the forehead. Rinse your hair away from your face or wash your face as the last step in your shower to get all residue out.

Double cleanse in the evening.

This K-beauty cleansing trademark is one step that beauty editors have taken to heart. Wearing a lot of makeup is a job hazard for most of them. Double cleansing is one way to make sure that skin is squeaky clean at the end of the day. As every dermatologist will also tell you, it's crucial to cleanse your face before bed. Even if you don't wear a lot of makeup, double cleansing will get rid of sunblock residue, dirt, and excess oil. Some of Allure's top cleansing oils are Clinique Take the Day Off Cleansing Oil, Neogen Real Cica Micellar Cleansing Oil, and the super affordable No. 7 Radiant Results Nourishing Micellar Cleansing Oil. Make sure to apply cleansing oil on a dry face, then gently massage to dislodge dirt and makeup and rinse. Follow up with your favorite facial cleanser.

Ditch the eye cream.

Eye creams are expensive. Kilikita says that they can be a waste of money. Dermatologist Dr. Anjali Mahto tells Refinery29 that eye creams don't penetrate the skin deeply enough to make a huge difference. Serums have smaller molecules that should help better. Heavy eye creams can also clog pores and can lead to milia, those tiny white bumps that look like whiteheads. If you're already using a hydrating serum, just include the undereye area, then apply your trusty moisturizer after.

Never squeeze your pimples.

A lot of us are guilty about this. Self beauty editor Rachel Jacoby Zoldan reminds you that squeezing pimples will not make them go away faster and will only get infected. Hydrocolloid patches will help prevent your dirty hands from touching your pimples and will sink all the gunk out of them. Elle recommends Welly Face Saver Clear Spot Bandages, Mighty Patch The Original, Peace Out Acne Healing Dots, and COSRX Acne Pimple Master Patch.

Change your pillowcases often.

Pillowcases absorb oil, dust, and bacteria from your face and the surroundings, and they all end up on your face. You'll notice a big difference once you change your pillowcases every couple of days or so.
