Give your scalp a break from tight ponytails. The hair claw is back!
It looks like we've been borrowing trends from the past a lot lately. From Billie Eilish's chunky chain necklaces to Ariana Grande's 60s-inspired makeup and outfits in her last music video and J. Lo's curtain bangs, it seems everyone want to escape virus-ridden 2020 and go for some nostalgia. Another blast from the past that's making its way back is the claw clip. From Insta-famous models Kendall Jenner to Bella Hadid and Hailey Beiber, the claw clip is enjoying a new audience. Ranging from $4 to an almost absurd amount $129, there's sure to be a claw clip to suit everyone's whim.
Aside from being a nostalgic hit, claw clips are actually friendlier to your scalp and hair. They allow you to put your hair up and out of your face without the strain of a tight ponytail or bun. Dr. Denise E. Chou, neurologist and assistant professor of neurology at Columbia University Medical Center, tells Elle Magazine that putting your hair in a tight bun or ponytail pulls the nerves in the scalp resulting to that common complaint that wearing ponytails result in headaches. The easiest remedy Chou suggests is simply avoid tight buns, ponytails, headbands, and anything that constricts the scalp. The hair claw is certainly a good alternative.
If you've also noticed some unusual hair loss lately, that can also be from tight hairstyles. Doris Day, a dermatologist and clinical associate professor of dermatology at the New York University Langone Medical Center, shares with Allure Magazine that "Traction alopecia is caused by anything that pulls on the hair, ultimately damaging the root and can lead to scarring and permanent hair loss. It's a process that usually takes years. Underlying causes can be tight braiding, tight ponytails, or even just pulling at the hair." Again, the hair claw is sounding like the better option.
