Ever since Beautyblender burst into the makeup scene in 2009, it has become a favorite applicator of makeup artists and can be found in every makeup junkie's toolbox. This bright pink, tear-shaped sponge is used to apply liquid makeup, but works well with powder formulations, too.
Since it's supposed to be damp when used, it can be a magnet for bacteria. If you notice your face getting itchy or zits are suddenly popping up, it's time to give your Beautyblender a good wash. Along with their iconic sponge, Beautyblender has also developed several types of cleansers that work perfectly with their sponge and even with any other sponges or makeup brushes you use.
Find the Perfect Match
Solid Cleanser
As described on the official Beautyblender website, this lavender-scented solid cleanser is a highly concentrated blend of palm oils, aloe and coconut oil that lifts stubborn stains. It promises to remove 99.7 percent of germs while conditioning your makeup tools. You can use it with both sponges and brushes. There is also a charcoal variant, as well as an unscented one. All cleansers are vegan.
Liquid Cleanser
This pretty much does the same job as the solid cleanser but is more portable. You can transfer it to smaller bottles for trips. The liquid form also helps maintain the shape of the sponge a bit better.
How to Clean a Beautyblender
Wet the sponge thoroughly and pour a few dops of liquid cleanser onto it. If you opt for the solid cleanser, then rub it against the soap until its saturated with the cleansing product. Gently squeeze and lather the sponge under running water. Rinse and repeat the process until the water runs clear.
If your Beautyblender has stubborn stains from darker shades of makeup like smokey eyeshadow or bronzers, soak your sponges in soapy water for an extended amount of time. Use the liquid cleanser or castile soap and let the sponge sit for a few hours and rinse well after. In case you're unfamiliar with other Beautyblenders, there area mini ones available for eye makeup.

Keep.It.Clean
This silicone cleansing pad speeds up your cleaning process. Pour a small amount of cleanser on the pad and rub your sponge against it. You can also lather up the sponge with solid cleanser then use this. Rinse and repeat until all traces of foundation are gone.
Instaclean
If you're in a hurry and don't have time for a deep cleanse, use this spray cleanser. It works just like dry shampoo and gives your sponge a quick clean. Just spray it on your Beautyblender and you're good to go. There is no need to rinse it off. It's really handy for travelling or quick touch ups outside your home.
What to Avoid When Caring for Your Beautyblenders
Do not put your Beautyblender in the microwave. While this works for other types of sponges, it will destroy the integrity of your Beautyblender. Constant and careful washing with soap and water is enough to eliminate bacteria from your Beautyblender sponges.
